RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
