The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
