With an announcement that pairs generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has pledged $2 billion to support UN emergency relief operations. Yet, this funding was accompanied by a stark message for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Pledge During Wider Funding Cuts
The pledge was declared against a backdrop of major cuts in US support of global aid. Further cuts are also anticipated from other major contributors such as Britain and Germany. The US representative, a senior Trump administration figure, made the statement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will be crucial for saving countless lives," stated the United Nations' relief coordinator. However, this amount constitutes just a small portion of America's historical contributions, which previously totaled approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
Funding with Specific Conditions
The latest American aid is not without restrictions. The money is focused on just 17 nations, including Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Significantly, Yemen and Afghanistan are explicitly excluded.
The representative explained this decision by citing evidence that in Afghanistan, aid money had been funneled to the Taliban. "The President will not allow any amount of public funds supporting organizations designated as terrorists," he asserted.
Additionally, the conditions prohibit funding for initiatives focused on global warming, which were described as not "life saving" and against "American interests."

Delivering a harsh warning, the US official warned the UN that it must "evolve or become obsolete." He emphasized that the American "piggy bank is not open to those organizations that seek to cling to previous methods."
He, a reported mastermind behind the closure of USAID, called for targeted and effective aid with no duplication among projects.
