Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
